Rose for Emily vs. Young Goodman

Gender performance issues can easily be traced in both William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown”. A Rose for Emily is set in Post civil war, Jefferson’s in South America while Faulkner’s story is set in seventeenth century, a time around the witch trials. Both stories explore the problem of societies that lists down the correct ways in which a woman is supposed to carry herself. In Judith Butler’s book, Bodies that Matter, the gender performance theory using its tenets that include; sex, race and gender are not biologically determined, and that an individual determines his or her own gender, there are social laws that restrict ones performance, any lack of conformation to the set standards will lead to punishment and that there is a stigma that is associated with this failure (2). An analysis of the cases of gender performance explained below tend to reflect many if not all of  these tenets as indicated prior by Butler. Faulkner in “A Rose for Emily” illustrates society in which Emily is less valued, controlled and dominated by her strict father while Hawthorne’s short story “Young Goodman Brown” illustrates how Faith, a dishonest woman,  helps change Goodman’s character from a religious man into a man that lacks faith in religion and dislikes pretence in righteousness.

At the beginning of Faulkner’s story “A Rose for Emily,”   Emily’s female neighbors are against her marriage to Homer because he is not a man who wants to marry a woman but preferred men instead. The female neighbors, with men disinterested, call upon the Baptist Minister to go and talk to her about her decision into marrying Homer but it is in vain as she is determined and continues her relationship with Homer. In Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily we see that,   “…the men did not want to interfere but at last the ladies forced the Baptist minister- Miss Emily’s people were Episcopal to call upon her’. He would never divulge what happened in that interview…” (Faulkner, 4)

These two incidences illustrate that a woman of  an aristocratic family is to marry an equally aristocratic man. This fact pushes Emily’s father to chase away suitor whom he believes are not good enough to the marriage of her daughter. Emily’s father is a strict and conservative man who makes every effort and ensures that Emily gets to be thirty years old but is still single.

Equally, in “Young Goodman Brown” Hawthorne  paints,  a picture of a nineteenth century woman who despite having made vows to their men who left them to go to war, had illicit affairs with other men in their husband’s absence.  Goodman goes for an errand and leaves Faith in the village. She sees him off with a parting kiss and a plea for him to cancel his journey until morning but he doesn’t heed to her desire.

In “Young Goodman Brown”  during their  parting,  “…Then God bless you” said Faith with pink ribbons “may you find all well when you come back…” ……“Amen” cried brown say thy prayers dear Faith and go to bed at dusk and no harm will come to thee,” (6)

Hawthorne paints a picture of an ideal woman to be one who prays and goes to bed early. Despite all these promises and assurances from her, Goodman is astonished that he meets Faith in the meeting of the wicked. Before that coincidental meeting, Goodman has a liking and faith in her wife but later he develops disliking to his wife and all the righteous people he thinks he understands better after the meeting.

Faulkner presents Emily as a recluse. After her father death and the mysterious disappearance of his husband Hommer. Emily locks herself Sin the house and can only be seen through the window. She is rarely seen outside the walls of her house. This pushes her to be independent especially when the little money she is left with is spent.  She does these by giving lesson on china plate painting classes to local children. According to Hawthorne In the end  the town people refer to her as a duty a care a sort of a hereditary obligation upon the town…(5)

She is presented here as an impervious and inescapable woman who will not give in to anything that is contrary to the old world that she understands better.

According to Hawthorne, in trying to hide Emily’s reluctance in paying taxes, colonel Satoris invents a story that can only be invented by a man. The colonel writes down in the city records that the city authority had borrowed money from her father, and that exempting her from paying taxes was a good way of paying the debt back (1).  Despite her imperviousness in paying taxes , colonel Saoris is an understanding man and decides as a way to assist her pay  her taxes to the authorities, he invents a story that see exempts her from paying taxes.

Faulkner believes that women are less important as compared to men in a “A Rose for Emily” when he explains that, the whole town goes to Emily’s funeral with the men out to show some sort of respectful affection for Emily who referred to as a ‘fallen monument’, while on the other hand women go there to satisfy their curiosity by just seeing the inside of her house where no one had seen except Tobe. Faulkner further qualifies this by stating that the funeral attendants had two different purposes, at Emily’s funeral.

According to Faulkner, “…..men came to show respect and honor while women simply went to see the interior of her house out of curiosity….,” (Faulkner, 1). Faulkner paints the picture of a woman as a person of less value as compared to a man.

According to Faulkner, Negro women are not allowed to walk the streets up and down without an apron. This encroachment leads to a tax fine to the authorities (1). Tobe is an old male and Emily’s house keeper. He is seen quite often getting into and out of her home compound. The fact that Negro women are not be seen walking in aprons leads Emily to employ a male Negro as a housekeeper.

Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is an insightful short story that shows how a dominating father uses his position to control and choose a marriage partner for her daughter. It leads us to know that the gender issue of class in marriage was perpetuated by the men during the seventeenth century New England. On the other hand Hawthorne “Young Goodman Brown” brings to a reader a story on how a religious woman who is expected to be virtuous turns out to be an unreliable and untruthful wife in the nineteenth century New England, and how this gender issue among women pulled men away from the Anglican Church faith of that time.
